3 key things to ace the interview according to an expert

Recruiters are typically pretty keen when it comes to detecting anxiety in applicants, and your mental state might be the very thing that gives an equally qualified candidate, the edge over you. Bostick writes, Even bots who are conducting screening interviews are trained to pick up on voice tone. If you are nervous or trying to remember points, it will be obvious and you wont be seen as someone who can inspire others or manage stress. She urges job seekers to master the craft of being comfortable, especially in high stakes situations. At the end of the day, you want to get hired for being singular, not for being a facsimile of every other candidate-you can never be all things to all people, so you might as well put the work into being the best version of yourself.Prepare in advance, but dont agonizeThis isnt to say, that you should ever wing it. Research and preparation have their part to play certainly, but if you agonize over your plan of attack, your personality is less likely to come through. Research the organization to find out key aspects of the culture. You are not expected to know details at this point but you should have an overview of the vision, mission, and current business trend.Backtick relayed a great way to ensure your preparation doesnt cause your voice to take a backseat take a mental snapshot of the three most important things you want to convey about yourself. The best way to go about doing this is through words or key phrases relating to yourself and or your experience that you think would be particularly relevant to a potential employer. Bostick explains,This works like a charm because it frees the mind of congestion and stress.First impressions are hard to eraseAs far as how you dress is concerned, the goal is to make an impression without being distracting. The surface level things, likedemeanor and attire, are important to address because, as Bostick pointed out to us, first impressions are very hard to erase. If you can, try to implement a detail that you know about either the interviewer or the firm in your dialogue to encourage a rapport. This can be furthered along by having questions prepared that you genuinely want to know the answer to, as opposed to questions you simply think youre supposed to ask.Interviewers know when questions are staged as they tend to be overused, or not sincere. In closing, Bostick, states,Once you are prepared, and in your comfort zone, forget about analyzing the interview. How Job Seekers Can Speed Up the Hiring Process

How Job Seekers Can Speed Up the Hiring Process How Job Seekers Can Speed Up the Hiring Process When a potential employer is moving the hiring process along at a glacial pace, is there anything a job candidate can do to help speed things up? The short answer is yes. As I explain in this post, there are several strategies you can use to motivate an employer to come to a hiring decision more quickly. Despite low unemployment and the ongoing demand for skilled talent, many job seekers find that the hiring process can drag on for a while. It’s not unusual for candidates to take part in three or even four interviews and, as a result, wait weeks for a final hiring decision. What’s causing the delay? Companies are being very cautious. They want to be certain they’re choosing the right person for the job in order to avoid a costly hiring mistake. As a job seeker, understand that you might have to wait longer than you’d like to receive an employment offer. But that doesn’t mean you have to sit back and twiddle your thumbs. Don’t assume there’s nothing you can do to accelerate the hiring process. Here are three ways you can potentially help the employer come to a decision more quickly. Approach #1: Don’t leave the interview uninformed Your efforts should begin during the job interview. Do not part ways with the hiring manager until you confirm that they have all the information needed from you, at least for the moment. For example, you might ask: “Do you have any other questions for me?” or “Do you need to know anything else about me that we haven’t already discussed?” You want to make sure that if the employer has any potential reservations that you have a chance to address them. You might learn, for instance, that the hiring manager questions whether you have the right technical skills for the position. You can provide more insight into your qualifications and note how you’ve used the skills in question in previous roles. Or you can explain how you plan to acquire training in the areas the employer feels you need to strengthen. Also, make sure you know the next steps in the hiring process before you leave the meeting. If it’s the first interview, ask “What does your timeline look like for hiring?” If you’ve completed what you believe to be the final interview, ask, “When might I expect to hear a decision?” This not only provides insight into what the employer is thinking but also helps you know when to follow up with the hiring manager, if necessary. SEARCH JOB OPENINGS Approach #2: Follow up, in more ways than one After an interview, your No. 1 priority is remaining top of mind with the hiring manager. The best way to do so is by following up. This requires a delicate hand. You want to be persistent. But you don’t want to be a pest or come across as too eager. Be sure to send a thank-you note within 24 hours of an interview. Email is acceptable, but consider sending a handwritten note via regular mail as well. It’s a nice touch and can help you stand out. Sending a thank-you note also reaffirms your interest in the position, and it’s an opportunity to emphasize your qualifications. If a week goes by and you haven’t heard back from the hiring manager, pick up the phone and call them. If the employer has no update for you, ask when you can expect to hear back and again stress your interest in the role. As you follow up, be aware of your tone. You can’t be too demanding. It’s important to be considerate, diplomatic and polite when asking busy hiring managers for updates. Try to keep your emotions out of it. That’s easier said than done, of course - especially if you really want the job. But over the years, I’ve seen too many candidates hurt their chances by getting overly emotional when speaking to hiring managers at this stage. If you haven’t been given a decision after another week passes, call the employer once more and ask if you’re still in consideration for the role. At this point, there’s no need to beat around the bush. You want to know if you’re viewed as a strong contender for the position or not. The way the hiring manager reacts to your inquiries at these various stages of follow-up can tell you a lot about where you stand. If the employer welcomes your calls and asks that you remain patient as the hiring process progresses, chances are good you’re still in the running for the role. If your contact seems reluctant to hear from you - or you can’t seem to get a hold of them - that might be a sign you need to move on. Approach #3: Make it clear that your search is moving forward One additional way to potentially speed up the hiring process is to remind the hiring manager that you are still on the job hunt. Let your contact know you’ve received interest from and have been interviewing with other companies (only if this if the case, of course). This sends a clear signal that you’re not sitting and waiting by the phone forever - and lets the employer in question know they’re not the only business competing for your talents. If you’ve stopped your job search, start it up again. No matter how far you’ve progressed in the hiring process, continue to actively job hunt. Don’t slow your efforts until you have an offer in hand. There’s always the chance that a seemingly surefire opportunity falls through. Who knows, you may end up with multiple job offers to consider. And that will only give you more leverage if you need to encourage a top-choice employer to come to a decision. Learn how Robert Half can help you in your job search! Should You Give More Than Two Weeks Notice - The Muse

Should You Give More Than Two Weeks Notice - The Muse Should You Give More Than Two Weeks Notice Unless you wear a paper hat to work, the generally accepted etiquette of quitting dictates you give two weeks’ notice before jumping ship. But the reality is, it’s rarely so cut and dry. Sometimes, you have to begin your new position pronto, and two weeks is all you can reasonably offer. Others, staying even two weeks is just prolonging the awkwardness. But occasionally, two weeks is a laughably short runway to tie up your affairs, and adding another week or so might be a good idea, not only for keeping you in good graces with your colleagues, but for your own sanity as well. Obviously there’s no simple answer, but ask yourself these questions and you’ll be one step closer to landing those coveted LinkedIn recommendations after you leave- not to mention give your conscience a breather. 1. How Many Emails Are in Your Inbox? Or, more specifically, how many follow-up or unanswered emails? I’m not suggesting that you need to get to Inbox Zero before you pack up your desk, but the number of emails, files on your desk, or loose ends you have hanging is a great gauge of how much tying up you’ll have to do before you leave. Once you’ve decided to quit and before you’ve handed in your two weeks notice, scan through the past quarter or two of emails in your inbox. Do a quick calculation of how much time it would take you to resolve each of the requests or how long it would take you to responsibly pass them off to someone else. If the work will take you more than one full week, then it’s probably a good idea to tack on another few days to your two weeks notice, given the business of quitting itself will likely eat up at least a week of your remaining tenure. 2. How Do Your Relationships Stand? No matter what you do, you’ll no doubt have developed some important relationships in your work. Part of leaving gracefully means making sure those relationships are left on the best terms possible before you clock out for the last time. As soon as you suspect you might be out the door, start taking the temperature of all your closest relationships, both internally and externally. Find out what’s going on in everyone else’s world, and try to anticipate how your departure might impact them. If you’re helping with a deal-clinching presentation coming up in three weeks or a conference next month that’s been in the works for the past year, cutting out in two weeks will probably put those relationships at risk. Consider how your resignation will impact your relationships, and make sure your exit date gives you and your network a workable cushion. 3. How Will Your Departure Impact Your Team? Whether you manage a team or you’re part of one, there’s no doubt your departure will impact them the most. And even if you think you’ve cleared the two-week check on questions #1 and #2, don’t overlook how your team will feel if you check out in 10 business days. If you have direct reports, spend some time going through each individual’s file and make notes of where you’re at with their career progression plans, goals, and any special projects. If you have an employee taking an important certification exam in a month, leaving in two weeks might wreak havoc on his study plans, not to mention his confidence. If you’re part of a team, the same applies. Think about how your team will be impacted and what they’ll be left to cover for when you’re gone. Leave too soon, and you’ll risk losing the hard earned respect you’ve built up so far. Give your team enough time to get into position (OK, but not too much), and they’ll appreciate the extra effort. Yes, convention has us all believing all we “have” to give is two weeks, but there are definitely times when that just isn’t enough time. Ask yourself these questions before deciding on a two-week departure, and you’ll help maintain your good reputation for all the jobs you’ll have in the future. Rules For Veterans Saluting In Civilian Clothes

Rules For Veterans Saluting In Civilian Clothes Rules For Veterans Saluting In Civilian Clothes The military salute is a long honored tradition with the origins of its beginnings largely unknown.   There are a few theories about the salute dating back to the Roman Empire days.  However it came to be, there are specific rules about how and when not to salute within the U.S. military.   History of the Hand Salute Many military historians believe that the hand salute might have begun in Rome. Even in regular society, if a citizen wanted to meet with a senator or other public  official, the citizen had to demonstrate he didnt have a weapon, and would approach with his right hand visible or raised.   Another theory suggests the practice stems from knights in armor, who traditionally raised the visors on their helmets with their right hands.  Whatever its origins, the salute eventually came to be seen as a sign of respect.   Its interesting to note that the traditional right-handed salute looks a little different in the Navy. The palm is turned downward, the thinking goes, because sailors gloves and hands would be dirty from working on the deck of a ship, for instance. It was perceived as insulting to show a dirty palm to a superior officer.   Through the centuries, various types of salutes have been used to honor each other, a nations flag, and even national leaders. For instance, the United States once used the Bellamy Salute during the Pledge of Allegiance in schools of the late 1800s. This was a highly used salute across the country by the younger generation of the time. However, this salute looked too similar to the Nazi salute that Adolf Hitler adopted in the early 1930s. President Roosevelt and Congress changed the Pledge of Allegiance salute to be a hand over the heart during World War II as the Bellamy salute had largely been adopted by Fascists around the world.   Uniformed MIlitary Personnel U.S. military personnel in uniform are required to salute when they encounter someone entitled by grade or rank to a salute, such as a superior officer. There are some exceptions: When in a moving vehicle it may be impractical to salute.  However, if a gate guard at a base entrance or check point sees a senior officer in a vehicle, the guard will salute as the car passes through the gate.  And when in a combat situation, a salute is forbidden, since it could signal to a watching enemy who the officers are. They are more likely to be considered valuable targets by the enemy.   The salute is considered a courteous exchange of greetings, with the junior military member always saluting first. When returning or rendering an individual salute, the head and eyes are turned toward the Colors or person saluted. When in ranks, the position of attention is maintained unless otherwise directed. All military personnel are required to salute the president, in his role as commander in chief. Also regardless of rank, any recipient of the Medal of Honor is granted a hand salute even from a more senior officer.   When Saluting Is Not Required Salutes are not rendered indoors, except in cases of formal reporting. When in formation, members dont return a salute unless commanded to do so. The usual procedure calls for the person in charge of the formation to salute on its behalf. Even if the formation is marching holding weapons, there is a hand salute used by the leader of the formation typically with a sword or hand for the group.   If a senior officer approaches, while military personnel are gathered in a group (but not in formation), whoever notices the officer first calls the group to attention. Then, all members salute the officer, and remain at attention until theyre given permission to stand at ease, or when the officer departs.   Veterans and Saluting Out of Uniform A provision of the 2009 Defense Authorization Act changed federal law to allow U.S. veterans and military personnel not in uniform to render the military hand-salute when the national anthem is played. This change adds to a provision which was passed in the 2008 Defense Bill, which authorized veterans and military personnel in civilian clothes to render the military salute during the raising, lowering or passing of the flag. Traditionally, veterans’ service organizations rendered the hand-salute during the national anthem and at events involving the national flag while wearing their organization’s headgear, although this wasnt actually spelled out in federal law.

3 Reasons Experienced People Dont Get Hired

3 Reasons Experienced People Dont Get Hired 3 Reasons Experienced People Dont Get Hired Remember that time you had a job interview and they called you and left a message on your answering machine by the time you got back home? Oh, right, that was back in the ‘90’s, wasn’t it…definitely a far cry from the reality of job searching today. It can become discouraging and disheartening when you know you have the experience, but you can barely get a response, let alone an interview or an offer. The reasons are many: there was a hiring / budget freeze, the recruiter ghosted you, or any number of other obstacles in your way. Let’s zoom in on the aspects, though, that are fully within your control: Nobody Knows Who You Are Bad resumes happen to great candidates. Far too often, I see a resume that could double as either a doctoral thesis or professional obituary. A resume that merely lists what you’ve done is a resume that’s more likely to get deleted â€" fast. Resumes that work feature 3 key components: who you are, what you do, and the value you bring â€" in that order. Who you are is more important than what you do. The reason for that is who you are is unique; in fact, it’s virtually the only thing that’s unique. And that’s what you should be emphasizing â€" the differentiated aspect of who you are. If your resume opens with anything that smells like, “Motivated professional,” or “Solid team player,” or “Resourceful manager,” then it’s time to take a deep reflective look inside, and bring out the real you. Candidates who get hired know the real you is infinitely more interesting than that boring resume language. The real you is impressive. The real you is enough. Everybody Else Looks Just Like You Monster.com is one of the most trafficked employment websites in the US. Indeed.com has surpassed Monster. And CareerBuilder is not far behind. While this is not a discussion about these specific job boards, the scope of job boards in general should tell you something: they’re that big because everyone’s on them. When you’re just one among the masses, you’re going to get nowhere, and you’re going to get there awfully slowly. If you decide to post your resume on a job board, don’t then sit back thinking, “If {I} built it, they will come.” That’s what the masses do. Candidates who get hired do something different when it comes to the job boards. Use the job boards strategically to find out who’s hiring. Then use your network to find a way directly in to that organization. This approach skyrockets your success rate from 1-2% to 40-70%. Just Anybody Is Not Going To Help You Use this saying to fuel your job search forward: “If it’s going to be, it’s up to me.” Certainly, professional assistance will give you a leg up, but you have to be the one to reach out, get it, and use the tools they provide the way they advised you to use them. Certainly, the right recruiter can be helpful, but you have to be the one who makes the recruiter’s job easy, by highlighting the skills the recruiter is looking for and keeping yourself top of mind. It doesn’t serve you to blast your resume all over the Internet, then wonder why everyone’s not beating a path to your inbox. Waiting on someone else to do the major things in your career and your life will never serve you. Remember all those boring resume words I mentioned earlier that you shouldn’t be using? Here’s another: “self-motivated.” Practically everyone says they’re self-motivated on their resume, but that doesn’t always play out in real life. Be deliberate and intentional in identifying the organizations you like, the potential opportunities that may be available, and the real human beings in that business who may be able to advise you. That won’t be just anybody. Zero in on the relevant decision makers, showcase the unique value you bring to the table that they actually need right now, initiate the conversation, and then wash, rinse, and repeat with the next organization. Keep doing it, until. If you’re an experienced candidate who’s been job searching, but not getting the calls back you think you should, find out precisely how to conduct your job search quickly and correctly in a free online presentation, 3 Simple Steps To Cut Your Job Search Time In HALF!

When to Back Out of a Job Interview Process

When to Back Out of a Job Interview Process When to Back Out of a Job Interview Process 1If you’ve ever left a job interview thinking to yourself, “What just happened?” then you know that it’s not always easy to decide on your next steps during a job search. In some situations- whether it’s because of something that happened during the interview itself, a clear lack of fit that you feel when talking to the hiring team, or the feeling that you’re being asked unreasonable demands before the job even starts- you may understandably decide that it’s smarter to back out of a job interview process rather than move forward. While you may assume that saying no to a job opportunity happens only rarely, some new research  on active job seekers commissioned by Montage suggests that this occurs more often than you might think. The data shows nearly one in three  candidates- 32%- have rejected a job offer because of the hiring and interview process. But even though a considerable number of job seekers turn down positions based on the hiring experience itself, when it comes to making a decision of this magnitude, you don’t want to take it lightly. Below you will find guidance to help you evaluate whether a job interview may have been unreasonable, and identify cases in which it may make sense to take a pass on what you hoped would be a good opportunity. When to Back Out of a Job Interview Process Was your job interview challenging- or over the line? Many tech companies today are known for their tough interview questions. Google’s hiring process in particular has become identified with difficult and somewhat quirky questioning  during interviews, but they aren’t the only company that takes this approach- Salesforce, Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, and more are among those that have been called out as at least sometimes selecting candidates based partly on how well people can answer off-beat questions. If you’re interviewing for a tech job, then some of this may come with the territory. But there’s a limit to how far such questions can be taken, particularly in fields outside of technology. Regardless of industry, anything asked must be professional and appropriate, avoiding stereotypes and negativity toward certain people or groups. If you’re made to feel uncomfortable by the types of interview questions that you’re asked- if they are overly personal; racist, homophobic, or misogynistic; and/or completely unrelated to your professional background or problem-solving style- then you may not want to work for this company. Were there only “oddball” questions in your job interview? The tech industry aside, most of the interview questions that companies ask should be designed to help the hiring team understand how you as a job candidate would perform in a particular role. If you find yourself fielding a list of only oddball questions- the kind that make you describe, for example, what you might wish for on a desert island, or what kind of animal you identify yourself as- be alert. As Montage explains on its blog, “Why” questions that probe why you might make certain decisions or act certain ways are more relevant, and should be present during the interview to indicate interest in a candidate: “Questions like, ‘If you were stuck on an island and could only have three things, what would you wish for?’ have little relevance for most jobs, and send a signal to candidates that your hiring team isn’t all that serious,” writes the Montage Talent team. “‘Why’ questions are more appropriate and always valuable, since they can reveal insight into candidates’ thought process and decision-making in real-life situations.” Are you still interested in the role? Feelings change, and thats perfectly understandable. Perhaps there was misalignment between the job description and the details youve collected through your interviews, or the original role you applied had a shift in focus. This happens, and important, long-term decisions like this shouldnt come down to settling on something that will lead to unhappiness or lack of career satisfaction. If youre not fully invested in a role â€" though you may have been originally â€" its best to back out of the job interview process and reset. Were red flags present during your interview process? Sometimes, it may be hard to put a finger on exactly what feels off about your interview experience. Keep an eye out for a few other red flag situations that may suggest that you don’t want this job: The hiring manager or interview team is unprepared or arrives late to the interview. The hiring team is unresponsive and/or fails to communicate with you in a timely, professional manner about position status and next steps. The social media presence of the hiring manager, team, or department is unprofessional or offensive. Remember, job interviews go two ways- you should use this time with a prospective employer to help you decide whether you want to work with a particular organization and team, just as they are deciding whether or not you’re the right fit for their group. As Montage writes: “Candidates are selecting their next boss as well as the company and the role, and they’re researching the hiring manager’s reputation as a good leader and mentor. The same applies to colleagues in the department or division.”So do your due diligence, and make sure that what you experience during the hiring process bodes well for your next job and future career. There’s a strong chance that many of your employees aren’t making this important connection. A survey by our company found that more than half of professionals (53 percent) wish they had more insight on how their day-to-day duties make a difference to the organization. Gen X employees feel the most disconnected The survey’s findings also point to a potential staffing management issue that many employers will want to move swiftly to address: Only 38 percent of professionals who are 35 to 54 years old - essentially, the Generation X demographic - said they see a direct correlation between their efforts and the company’s performance. This compares to 44 percent of employees who are 18 to 34 years old (primarily millennials - Generation Y and Generation Z) and 59 percent of workers over the age of 55(baby boomers). Given that many Gen X workers are now serving in leadership roles, this disconnect could ultimately hurt a company’s bottom line if it is left to fester. Tim Hird, executive director of Robert Half Management Resources, says, “It’s concerning that so many workers who are 35 to 54 - a group that often serves as managers and top executives - lack a complete understanding of how their responsibilities help their organization’s bottom line.” Hird also notes that when workers have a sense of connection, they are more engaged, make better spending decisions and can identify new ways to increase productivity and growth. However, interestingly, the survey also found that only about half (51 percent) of respondents from the 35 to 54 age group said they would like more insight on how their work makes an impact. Why not a higher percentage? It could be that Gen X professionals in some organizations do not have someone working above them who could provide this perspective. Others may not be comfortable asking their manager to provide such insight, as they might be concerned that admitting they do not completely understand how their work makes a difference will somehow reflect poorly on them. All accounting and finance staff must be able to visualize how their work fits into the ‘big picture’ Even though millennial and baby boomer employees appear to have an easier time connecting their contributions to the bottom line, the survey findings show that managers need to do more to ensure that workers across all demographic groups in their organization understand how their work adds value. And failing to prioritize these efforts could have a negative impact on the business, according to Hird. “Managers who do not have regular conversations with staff about how their work affects the company are missing a major opportunity to develop ideas for improving the business,” he says. Good communication from management is essential to ensuring that accounting and finance employees know how they as, individuals, are making a difference at the firm. With that in mind, here's some advice for helping employees better understand how they make a difference: Discuss company performance and goals with staff members at all levels. Sharing this knowledge directly can also inspire workers to boost their own performance. Find ways to keep the dialogue going. Staff meetings, performance reviews and regular check-ins all provide opportunities for managers to communicate how individual employees’ contributions benefit the business. Accounting and finance leaders should also seek out external perspectives as a way to benchmark their team’s performance and learn best practices from other firms. Executives can check in with their networks and with consultants to see how managers at other companies are communicating with their staff members about their contributions. Tapping outside resources for insights can yield ideas from a diverse set of organizations. Tags
