Military Jokes And Humor
Military Jokes And HumorMilitary Jokes And HumorMinot AFB opened in February 1957 and supports Continous Bomber Presence (CBP) as well as Intercontinental Ballistic Missles. The strategic importance of this kusine, its mission, billions of dollars of strategic bombers, nuclear weapons and missiles cannot be underestimated, but the cold weather and remoteness is often the butt of many military jokes. This base is in the middle of NORTH DAKOTA To say the Air Force Airmen create jokes about their living conditions in such a place is an understatement. Here is a classic joke about life in Minot AFB during the winter. The most used phrase about the Minot Air Force Base as well as the town itself is a simple question and answerQuestion Why Not Minot?Answer Freezins the Reason. Many who have grown accustomed to the base and its permanent placement within the polar vortex will quickly answer, No other base has two-thirds of the nuclear triad (Bombers, ICBMs) with Ballistic Missile Submarines being the third of the Strategic Deterent Mission. Here is a classic long story diary form joke about life at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota during the winter months. An Airmans Jurnal December 8 - 600 PM. It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow December 9 - We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight Can there be a more lovely place in the whole world? Putting in for an assignment at Minot welches the best idea Ive ever had. Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life. December 12 - Th e sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry, well definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful Bob says well have so much snow by the end of winter, that Ill never want to see snow again. I dont think thats possible. Bob is such a nice man, Im glad hes our neighbor. December 14 - Snow lovely snow 8 last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I didnt realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but Ill certainly get back in shape this way. December 15 - 20 inches of snow in theforecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wifes car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think thats silly. We arent in A laska, after all. December 16 - Ice storm this morning. Fell on my butt on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an hour, which I think welches very cruel. December 17 - Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I shouldve bought a wood stove, but wont admit it to her. God I hate it when shes right. I cant believe Im freezing to death in my own living room. December 20 - Electricitys back on, but had another 14 of the damn stuff last night. More shoveling. Took all day. Damn snowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said theyre too busy playing hockey. I think theyre lying. Called the BX to see about buying a snow blower and theyre out. Might have another shipment in March. I think theyre lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the base will issue me a ticket, and if you get three, you have to move off-base. I think hes lying. December 22 - Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white crap fell today, and its so cold it probably wont melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to poop. By the time I got undressed, pooped and dressed again, I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter but he says hes too busy. I think the jerk is lying. December 23 - Only 2 of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she nuts Why didnt she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did but I think shes lying. December 24 - 6. Snow packed so hard by snowplow, I broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the son of a bitch who drives that snowplow Ill drag him through the snow by his balls and beat him to death with my broken shovel. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where Ive just been Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the damn snowplow. December 25 - Merry -bleeping- Christmas 20 more inches of the damn slop tonight. Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. I hate the snow Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think shes a fricking idiot. If I have to watch Its A Wondeful Life one more time, Im going to stuff her into the microwave. December 26 - Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever put Minot on the dream sheet? It was all HER idea. Shes really getting on my nerves. December 27 - Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze, CE finally came after 14 hours of w aiting for for them. Said it was a busy day. I know the SOBs are lying. December 28 - Warmed up to above -20. Still snowed in. THE BITCH is driving me crazy December 29 - 10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. Thats the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am? December 30 - Roof caved in. I beat up the snow plow driver. The commander is now giving me an Article 15, for not only the beating I gave the driver, but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his ass. The wife went home to her mother. 9 of snow predicted. December 31 - I set fire to whats left of the house. No more shoveling. January 8 - Feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to thebed? So, I ask you again - Why Not Minot?Military Jokes and Humor

5 Strategies for Creating a Winning Staffing Management Game Plan
5 Strategies for Creating a Winning Staffing Management Game Plan5 Strategies for Creating a Winning Staffing Management Game PlanThe responsibility for the success of the team starts with the coach, who develops the plan that is then executed by the players - who are extremely well-prepared.In a 1993 interview with the Harvard Business Review (HBR), former San Francisco 49ers head coach Bill Walsh was asked how he achieved quickness and responsiveness in his teams. The quote above was just part of his response. But it is a significant statement. As the HBR article notes, Walshs focus on developing long-range strategic and personnel plans for the 49ers from the moment he joined the organization in 1979 helped him create a powerhouse team that won three Super Bowl titles during his tenure.Building an all-star finance and accounting team for your geschftlicher umgang also requires a solid game plan. With a well-thought-out staffing management strategy, you can complement the abilities of your current MVPs, and give them the support they need to deliver their best performance. You can also identify and address skills gaps that could undermine your finance functions ability to meet critical deadlines, keep clients satisfied and generate new business. When developing his personnel strategy, Walsh, according to HBR, focused on what other coaches had considered the minutiae of the game minute-by-minute choreographing of practices, breaking down individual and group tactics into parts, and defining responsibilities and setting objectives for both players and coaches. You may not need to get this detailed when creating a game plan for your accounting and finance organization (although it cant hurt). But do consider applying the following five strategies as part of your processStrategy 1. Conduct a talent auditStep back and assess your current team members to determine their strengths. Dont just consider technical skills. Think about your employees interpersonal abilitie s and leadership potential, too. Public speaking skills, business acumen and effectiveness in collaborating with people inside and outside of your department are all qualities that deepen your finance functions bench strength. A thorough assessment of each players talents can also help to inform your succession planning efforts for your organization.Strategy 2. Identify critical gaps in your rosterOnce you fully gauge your existing staffs abilities, think about what roles and skills youd need to recruit to create a high-performing and well-balanced dream team for your finance function. To fill critical gaps, would you need to hire mora full-time staff? Could you train and develop promising employees? Or would it be better to engage specialists and experienced consultants? Depending on the needs of your business, you may find you need to employ all the above staffing strategies. (See Strategy 4.)Strategy 3. Determine how long you will need certain skillsYour staffing management strat egy should be designed to be flexible. It must stretch and contract with ease and speed as workload demands fluctuate. Thats why its important to differentiate between project-based and ongoing needs when creating your game plan. For example, if your firm pursues a merger or acquisition, or an IPO, you might need to hire specialized consultants to help guide the business successfully through these big change events. On the other hand, entering a new market or taking on a major new account might require you to expand your roster of full-time accounting and finance employees.Strategy 4. Know how to compete for top talentWhen you extend job offers to in-demand candidates, start with salaries that are at or above market rates - and be prepared to negotiate if needed. (You can use our Salary Calculator to quickly determine compensation ranges in your market for accounting and finance roles youre trying to fill.) Your game plan for recruiting top players should also include publicizing t he compelling perks your company offers, such as a work-life balance program.Strategy 5. Keep top performers from jumping shipSavvy managers know they need to put as much effort into retaining top players as they do to recruit them. So, your staffing management strategy should include tactics for keeping MVPs motivated to stay with your organization for the long term. Clearly mapping milestones for career achievement and offering professional development opportunities are just some ways to keep your employees engaged and satisfied on the job.Creating a winning staffing management game plan for your accounting and finance team requires a lot of careful thought. Even then, theres no guarantee that every staffing decision you make will be the right one. Youll also need to adjust your strategy over time, as your organization changes and faces new challenges. But having a plan is better than no plan at all.As Coach Walsh told HBR in 1993, You need to have a plan even for the worst scenar io. It doesnt mean that it will always work it doesnt mean that you will always be successful. But you will always be prepared and at your best.Great teams dont just happen - theyre builtLooking for more ideas on how to build a strong team for your accounting and finance function? Laszlo Bock, Googles work guru, starts new company Humu to make work better
Laszlo motorrad, Googles work guru, starts new company Humu to make work betterLaszlo Bock, Googles work guru, starts new company Humu to make work betterLaszlo Bock is the innovative man behind Googles company culture of free meals and shuttle buses. Now hes planning something new.As Googles former Senior Vice President of People Operations, Bock made the companys culture more cooperative and wrote a bestselling book about how, titled Work RulesAfter Bock announced he was leaving Google in 2016, reports of his new startup emerged. In an email to family and friends, he said his new pursuit would be built around the principle that every job can have meaning, that if you give people freedom they will amaze you, that applied science (which I dubbed people analytics a decade back) can illuminate the truth about what really makes people happy and productive. On Monday, Bock elaborated what thatmeant in his first public announcement that he was starting a new company called humu to make wor k better.Citing U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics, Bock said he was alarmed to find out wespend eight times as much time working as we do caring for others. Worse for Bock was finding out that two-thirds of Americans only see their work as just a job.He wants to change that. He believes work should be better than that. It needs to be better than that. If were devoting most of ur lives to work, that experience should be meaningful, impactful, productive.Work RulesThis is not the first time Bock has talked about making work meaningful. In fact, improving the culture of work was the thesis to his bestselling book. He used Google as a positivecase study on how leaders can make work meaningful for their employees through three principles finding a compelling mission, being transparent, and giving their people a voice. The Humuhumunukunukuapuaa of the animal work worldMaking work better sounds great, we can all agree, but theres not much detail on how humu is planning to do this.Is humu going to be a LinkedIn jobs motherboard site, or the Goop lifestyle publication of the workforce, or a Lean-In circle for job seekers and advisers to share wisdom and talk shop, or a combination of all of the above? All we have are mysterious clues from Bock himself. When a person on Twitter noted that somebody has to be building a LinkedIn killer, Bock replied archly, Yes..someone.Humus website is currently sparse. Theres only the caption, making work better through science, machine learning, and a little bit of love with a photo of a fish.A reverse Google image search tell us this fish is a Humuhumunukunukuapuaa (pronounced who-moo-who-moo-noo-koo-noo-koo-ah-pooah-ah), the State Fish of Hawaii.Ok, now the name of the company makes more sense as way to shorten that fishs name - but what does a reef triggerfish have to do with work?We took a look at the fishs characteristics for clues, and it does sound like someone we might have worked with. This reef triggerfish has a pretty face and ra zor-sharp teeth. Its known for its aggressive, solitary nature. Itscolor is most vivid when itis healthy and feels unthreatened. Is Bock telling us that were all lonely, competitive fish trying to find environmentswhere our coats can shine?Ladders has reached out to Bock andhis humu co-founder Wayne Crosby to find out more about humus mission, so we can stop projecting work anxieties ontoa Hawaiian fish. We will update when we get a response.

Recruiters are typically pretty keen when it comes to detecting anxiety in applicants, and your mental state might be the very thing that gives an equally qualified candidate, the edge over you. Bostick writes, Even bots who are conducting screening interviews are trained to pick up on voice tone. If you are nervous or trying to remember points, it will be obvious and you wont be seen as someone who can inspire others or manage stress. She urges job seekers to master the craft of being comfortable, especially in high stakes situations. At the end of the day, you want to get hired for being singular, not for being a facsimile of every other candidate-you can never be all things to all people, so you might as well put the work into being the best version of yourself.Prepare in advance, but dont agonizeThis isnt to say, that you should ever wing it. Research and preparation have their part to play certainly, but if you agonize over your plan of attack, your personality is less likely to come through. Research the organization to find out key aspects of the culture. You are not expected to know details at this point but you should have an overview of the vision, mission, and current business trend.Backtick relayed a great way to ensure your preparation doesnt cause your voice to take a backseat take a mental snapshot of the three most important things you want to convey about yourself. The best way to go about doing this is through words or key phrases relating to yourself and or your experience that you think would be particularly relevant to a potential employer. Bostick explains,This works like a charm because it frees the mind of congestion and stress.First impressions are hard to eraseAs far as how you dress is concerned, the goal is to make an impression without being distracting. The surface level things, likedemeanor and attire, are important to address because, as Bostick pointed out to us, first impressions are very hard to erase. If you can, try to implement a detail that you know about either the interviewer or the firm in your dialogue to encourage a rapport. This can be furthered along by having questions prepared that you genuinely want to know the answer to, as opposed to questions you simply think youre supposed to ask.Interviewers know when questions are staged as they tend to be overused, or not sincere. In closing, Bostick, states,Once you are prepared, and in your comfort zone, forget about analyzing the interview. How Job Seekers Can Speed Up the Hiring Process
How Job Seekers Can Speed Up the Hiring Process How Job Seekers Can Speed Up the Hiring Process When a potential employer is moving the hiring process along at a glacial pace, is there anything a job candidate can do to help speed things up? The short answer is yes. As I explain in this post, there are several strategies you can use to motivate an employer to come to a hiring decision more quickly. Despite low unemployment and the ongoing demand for skilled talent, many job seekers find that the hiring process can drag on for a while. Itâs not unusual for candidates to take part in three or even four interviews and, as a result, wait weeks for a final hiring decision. Whatâs causing the delay? Companies are being very cautious. They want to be certain theyâre choosing the right person for the job in order to avoid a costly hiring mistake. As a job seeker, understand that you might have to wait longer than youâd like to receive an employment offer. But that doesnât mean you have to sit back and twiddle your thumbs. Donât assume thereâs nothing you can do to accelerate the hiring process. Here are three ways you can potentially help the employer come to a decision more quickly. Approach #1: Donât leave the interview uninformed Your efforts should begin during the job interview. Do not part ways with the hiring manager until you confirm that they have all the information needed from you, at least for the moment. For example, you might ask: âDo you have any other questions for me?â or âDo you need to know anything else about me that we havenât already discussed?â You want to make sure that if the employer has any potential reservations that you have a chance to address them. You might learn, for instance, that the hiring manager questions whether you have the right technical skills for the position. You can provide more insight into your qualifications and note how youâve used the skills in question in previous roles. Or you can explain how you plan to acquire training in the areas the employer feels you need to strengthen. Also, make sure you know the next steps in the hiring process before you leave the meeting. If itâs the first interview, ask âWhat does your timeline look like for hiring?â If youâve completed what you believe to be the final interview, ask, âWhen might I expect to hear a decision?â This not only provides insight into what the employer is thinking but also helps you know when to follow up with the hiring manager, if necessary. SEARCH JOB OPENINGS Approach #2: Follow up, in more ways than one After an interview, your No. 1 priority is remaining top of mind with the hiring manager. The best way to do so is by following up. This requires a delicate hand. You want to be persistent. But you donât want to be a pest or come across as too eager. Be sure to send a thank-you note within 24 hours of an interview. Email is acceptable, but consider sending a handwritten note via regular mail as well. Itâs a nice touch and can help you stand out. Sending a thank-you note also reaffirms your interest in the position, and itâs an opportunity to emphasize your qualifications. If a week goes by and you havenât heard back from the hiring manager, pick up the phone and call them. If the employer has no update for you, ask when you can expect to hear back and again stress your interest in the role. As you follow up, be aware of your tone. You canât be too demanding. Itâs important to be considerate, diplomatic and polite when asking busy hiring managers for updates. Try to keep your emotions out of it. Thatâs easier said than done, of course - especially if you really want the job. But over the years, Iâve seen too many candidates hurt their chances by getting overly emotional when speaking to hiring managers at this stage. If you havenât been given a decision after another week passes, call the employer once more and ask if youâre still in consideration for the role. At this point, thereâs no need to beat around the bush. You want to know if youâre viewed as a strong contender for the position or not. The way the hiring manager reacts to your inquiries at these various stages of follow-up can tell you a lot about where you stand. If the employer welcomes your calls and asks that you remain patient as the hiring process progresses, chances are good youâre still in the running for the role. If your contact seems reluctant to hear from you - or you canât seem to get a hold of them - that might be a sign you need to move on. Approach #3: Make it clear that your search is moving forward One additional way to potentially speed up the hiring process is to remind the hiring manager that you are still on the job hunt. Let your contact know youâve received interest from and have been interviewing with other companies (only if this if the case, of course). This sends a clear signal that youâre not sitting and waiting by the phone forever - and lets the employer in question know theyâre not the only business competing for your talents. If youâve stopped your job search, start it up again. No matter how far youâve progressed in the hiring process, continue to actively job hunt. Donât slow your efforts until you have an offer in hand. Thereâs always the chance that a seemingly surefire opportunity falls through. Who knows, you may end up with multiple job offers to consider. And that will only give you more leverage if you need to encourage a top-choice employer to come to a decision. Learn how Robert Half can help you in your job search! Should You Give More Than Two Weeks Notice - The Muse
Should You Give More Than Two Weeks Notice - The Muse Should You Give More Than Two Weeks Notice Unless you wear a paper hat to work, the generally accepted etiquette of quitting dictates you give two weeksâ notice before jumping ship. But the reality is, itâs rarely so cut and dry. Sometimes, you have to begin your new position pronto, and two weeks is all you can reasonably offer. Others, staying even two weeks is just prolonging the awkwardness. But occasionally, two weeks is a laughably short runway to tie up your affairs, and adding another week or so might be a good idea, not only for keeping you in good graces with your colleagues, but for your own sanity as well. Obviously thereâs no simple answer, but ask yourself these questions and youâll be one step closer to landing those coveted LinkedIn recommendations after you leave- not to mention give your conscience a breather. 1. How Many Emails Are in Your Inbox? Or, more specifically, how many follow-up or unanswered emails? Iâm not suggesting that you need to get to Inbox Zero before you pack up your desk, but the number of emails, files on your desk, or loose ends you have hanging is a great gauge of how much tying up youâll have to do before you leave. Once youâve decided to quit and before youâve handed in your two weeks notice, scan through the past quarter or two of emails in your inbox. Do a quick calculation of how much time it would take you to resolve each of the requests or how long it would take you to responsibly pass them off to someone else. If the work will take you more than one full week, then itâs probably a good idea to tack on another few days to your two weeks notice, given the business of quitting itself will likely eat up at least a week of your remaining tenure. 2. How Do Your Relationships Stand? No matter what you do, youâll no doubt have developed some important relationships in your work. Part of leaving gracefully means making sure those relationships are left on the best terms possible before you clock out for the last time. As soon as you suspect you might be out the door, start taking the temperature of all your closest relationships, both internally and externally. Find out whatâs going on in everyone elseâs world, and try to anticipate how your departure might impact them. If youâre helping with a deal-clinching presentation coming up in three weeks or a conference next month thatâs been in the works for the past year, cutting out in two weeks will probably put those relationships at risk. Consider how your resignation will impact your relationships, and make sure your exit date gives you and your network a workable cushion. 3. How Will Your Departure Impact Your Team? Whether you manage a team or youâre part of one, thereâs no doubt your departure will impact them the most. And even if you think youâve cleared the two-week check on questions #1 and #2, donât overlook how your team will feel if you check out in 10 business days. If you have direct reports, spend some time going through each individualâs file and make notes of where youâre at with their career progression plans, goals, and any special projects. If you have an employee taking an important certification exam in a month, leaving in two weeks might wreak havoc on his study plans, not to mention his confidence. If youâre part of a team, the same applies. Think about how your team will be impacted and what theyâll be left to cover for when youâre gone. Leave too soon, and youâll risk losing the hard earned respect youâve built up so far. Give your team enough time to get into position (OK, but not too much), and theyâll appreciate the extra effort. Yes, convention has us all believing all we âhaveâ to give is two weeks, but there are definitely times when that just isnât enough time. Ask yourself these questions before deciding on a two-week departure, and youâll help maintain your good reputation for all the jobs youâll have in the future. Rules For Veterans Saluting In Civilian Clothes
Rules For Veterans Saluting In Civilian Clothes Rules For Veterans Saluting In Civilian Clothes The military salute is a long honored tradition with the origins of its beginnings largely unknown. There are a few theories about the salute dating back to the Roman Empire days. However it came to be, there are specific rules about how and when not to salute within the U.S. military. History of the Hand Salute Many military historians believe that the hand salute might have begun in Rome. Even in regular society, if a citizen wanted to meet with a senator or other public official, the citizen had to demonstrate he didnt have a weapon, and would approach with his right hand visible or raised. Another theory suggests the practice stems from knights in armor, who traditionally raised the visors on their helmets with their right hands. Whatever its origins, the salute eventually came to be seen as a sign of respect. Its interesting to note that the traditional right-handed salute looks a little different in the Navy. The palm is turned downward, the thinking goes, because sailors gloves and hands would be dirty from working on the deck of a ship, for instance. It was perceived as insulting to show a dirty palm to a superior officer. Through the centuries, various types of salutes have been used to honor each other, a nations flag, and even national leaders. For instance, the United States once used the Bellamy Salute during the Pledge of Allegiance in schools of the late 1800s. This was a highly used salute across the country by the younger generation of the time. However, this salute looked too similar to the Nazi salute that Adolf Hitler adopted in the early 1930s. President Roosevelt and Congress changed the Pledge of Allegiance salute to be a hand over the heart during World War II as the Bellamy salute had largely been adopted by Fascists around the world. Uniformed MIlitary Personnel U.S. military personnel in uniform are required to salute when they encounter someone entitled by grade or rank to a salute, such as a superior officer. There are some exceptions: When in a moving vehicle it may be impractical to salute. However, if a gate guard at a base entrance or check point sees a senior officer in a vehicle, the guard will salute as the car passes through the gate. And when in a combat situation, a salute is forbidden, since it could signal to a watching enemy who the officers are. They are more likely to be considered valuable targets by the enemy. The salute is considered a courteous exchange of greetings, with the junior military member always saluting first. When returning or rendering an individual salute, the head and eyes are turned toward the Colors or person saluted. When in ranks, the position of attention is maintained unless otherwise directed. All military personnel are required to salute the president, in his role as commander in chief. Also regardless of rank, any recipient of the Medal of Honor is granted a hand salute even from a more senior officer. When Saluting Is Not Required Salutes are not rendered indoors, except in cases of formal reporting. When in formation, members dont return a salute unless commanded to do so. The usual procedure calls for the person in charge of the formation to salute on its behalf. Even if the formation is marching holding weapons, there is a hand salute used by the leader of the formation typically with a sword or hand for the group. If a senior officer approaches, while military personnel are gathered in a group (but not in formation), whoever notices the officer first calls the group to attention. Then, all members salute the officer, and remain at attention until theyre given permission to stand at ease, or when the officer departs. Veterans and Saluting Out of Uniform A provision of the 2009 Defense Authorization Act changed federal law to allow U.S. veterans and military personnel not in uniform to render the military hand-salute when the national anthem is played. This change adds to a provision which was passed in the 2008 Defense Bill, which authorized veterans and military personnel in civilian clothes to render the military salute during the raising, lowering or passing of the flag. Traditionally, veteransâ service organizations rendered the hand-salute during the national anthem and at events involving the national flag while wearing their organizationâs headgear, although this wasnt actually spelled out in federal law.

3 Reasons Experienced People Dont Get Hired
3 Reasons Experienced People Dont Get Hired 3 Reasons Experienced People Dont Get Hired Remember that time you had a job interview and they called you and left a message on your answering machine by the time you got back home? Oh, right, that was back in the â90âs, wasnât itâ¦definitely a far cry from the reality of job searching today. It can become discouraging and disheartening when you know you have the experience, but you can barely get a response, let alone an interview or an offer. The reasons are many: there was a hiring / budget freeze, the recruiter ghosted you, or any number of other obstacles in your way. Letâs zoom in on the aspects, though, that are fully within your control: Nobody Knows Who You Are Bad resumes happen to great candidates. Far too often, I see a resume that could double as either a doctoral thesis or professional obituary. A resume that merely lists what youâve done is a resume thatâs more likely to get deleted â" fast. Resumes that work feature 3 key components: who you are, what you do, and the value you bring â" in that order. Who you are is more important than what you do. The reason for that is who you are is unique; in fact, itâs virtually the only thing thatâs unique. And thatâs what you should be emphasizing â" the differentiated aspect of who you are. If your resume opens with anything that smells like, âMotivated professional,â or âSolid team player,â or âResourceful manager,â then itâs time to take a deep reflective look inside, and bring out the real you. Candidates who get hired know the real you is infinitely more interesting than that boring resume language. The real you is impressive. The real you is enough. Everybody Else Looks Just Like You Monster.com is one of the most trafficked employment websites in the US. Indeed.com has surpassed Monster. And CareerBuilder is not far behind. While this is not a discussion about these specific job boards, the scope of job boards in general should tell you something: theyâre that big because everyoneâs on them. When youâre just one among the masses, youâre going to get nowhere, and youâre going to get there awfully slowly. If you decide to post your resume on a job board, donât then sit back thinking, âIf {I} built it, they will come.â Thatâs what the masses do. Candidates who get hired do something different when it comes to the job boards. Use the job boards strategically to find out whoâs hiring. Then use your network to find a way directly in to that organization. This approach skyrockets your success rate from 1-2% to 40-70%. Just Anybody Is Not Going To Help You Use this saying to fuel your job search forward: âIf itâs going to be, itâs up to me.â Certainly, professional assistance will give you a leg up, but you have to be the one to reach out, get it, and use the tools they provide the way they advised you to use them. Certainly, the right recruiter can be helpful, but you have to be the one who makes the recruiterâs job easy, by highlighting the skills the recruiter is looking for and keeping yourself top of mind. It doesnât serve you to blast your resume all over the Internet, then wonder why everyoneâs not beating a path to your inbox. Waiting on someone else to do the major things in your career and your life will never serve you. Remember all those boring resume words I mentioned earlier that you shouldnât be using? Hereâs another: âself-motivated.â Practically everyone says theyâre self-motivated on their resume, but that doesnât always play out in real life. Be deliberate and intentional in identifying the organizations you like, the potential opportunities that may be available, and the real human beings in that business who may be able to advise you. That wonât be just anybody. Zero in on the relevant decision makers, showcase the unique value you bring to the table that they actually need right now, initiate the conversation, and then wash, rinse, and repeat with the next organization. Keep doing it, until. If youâre an experienced candidate whoâs been job searching, but not getting the calls back you think you should, find out precisely how to conduct your job search quickly and correctly in a free online presentation, 3 Simple Steps To Cut Your Job Search Time In HALF!

When to Back Out of a Job Interview Process
When to Back Out of a Job Interview Process When to Back Out of a Job Interview Process 1If youâve ever left a job interview thinking to yourself, âWhat just happened?â then you know that itâs not always easy to decide on your next steps during a job search. In some situations- whether itâs because of something that happened during the interview itself, a clear lack of fit that you feel when talking to the hiring team, or the feeling that youâre being asked unreasonable demands before the job even starts- you may understandably decide that itâs smarter to back out of a job interview process rather than move forward. While you may assume that saying no to a job opportunity happens only rarely, some new research on active job seekers commissioned by Montage suggests that this occurs more often than you might think. The data shows nearly one in three candidates- 32%- have rejected a job offer because of the hiring and interview process. But even though a considerable number of job seekers turn down positions based on the hiring experience itself, when it comes to making a decision of this magnitude, you donât want to take it lightly. Below you will find guidance to help you evaluate whether a job interview may have been unreasonable, and identify cases in which it may make sense to take a pass on what you hoped would be a good opportunity. When to Back Out of a Job Interview Process Was your job interview challenging- or over the line? Many tech companies today are known for their tough interview questions. Googleâs hiring process in particular has become identified with difficult and somewhat quirky questioning during interviews, but they arenât the only company that takes this approach- Salesforce, Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, and more are among those that have been called out as at least sometimes selecting candidates based partly on how well people can answer off-beat questions. If youâre interviewing for a tech job, then some of this may come with the territory. But thereâs a limit to how far such questions can be taken, particularly in fields outside of technology. Regardless of industry, anything asked must be professional and appropriate, avoiding stereotypes and negativity toward certain people or groups. If youâre made to feel uncomfortable by the types of interview questions that youâre asked- if they are overly personal; racist, homophobic, or misogynistic; and/or completely unrelated to your professional background or problem-solving style- then you may not want to work for this company. Were there only âoddballâ questions in your job interview? The tech industry aside, most of the interview questions that companies ask should be designed to help the hiring team understand how you as a job candidate would perform in a particular role. If you find yourself fielding a list of only oddball questions- the kind that make you describe, for example, what you might wish for on a desert island, or what kind of animal you identify yourself as- be alert. As Montage explains on its blog, âWhyâ questions that probe why you might make certain decisions or act certain ways are more relevant, and should be present during the interview to indicate interest in a candidate: âQuestions like, âIf you were stuck on an island and could only have three things, what would you wish for?â have little relevance for most jobs, and send a signal to candidates that your hiring team isnât all that serious,â writes the Montage Talent team. ââWhyâ questions are more appropriate and always valuable, since they can reveal insight into candidatesâ thought process and decision-making in real-life situations.â Are you still interested in the role? Feelings change, and thats perfectly understandable. Perhaps there was misalignment between the job description and the details youve collected through your interviews, or the original role you applied had a shift in focus. This happens, and important, long-term decisions like this shouldnt come down to settling on something that will lead to unhappiness or lack of career satisfaction. If youre not fully invested in a role â" though you may have been originally â" its best to back out of the job interview process and reset. Were red flags present during your interview process? Sometimes, it may be hard to put a finger on exactly what feels off about your interview experience. Keep an eye out for a few other red flag situations that may suggest that you donât want this job: The hiring manager or interview team is unprepared or arrives late to the interview. The hiring team is unresponsive and/or fails to communicate with you in a timely, professional manner about position status and next steps. The social media presence of the hiring manager, team, or department is unprofessional or offensive. Remember, job interviews go two ways- you should use this time with a prospective employer to help you decide whether you want to work with a particular organization and team, just as they are deciding whether or not youâre the right fit for their group. As Montage writes: âCandidates are selecting their next boss as well as the company and the role, and theyâre researching the hiring managerâs reputation as a good leader and mentor. The same applies to colleagues in the department or division.âSo do your due diligence, and make sure that what you experience during the hiring process bodes well for your next job and future career. Dont Leave Accounting and Finance Staff Puzzled
Donât Leave Accounting and Finance Staff Puzzled Donât Leave Accounting and Finance Staff Puzzled Managers: You expect your accounting and finance staff to deliver the best work possible and help the company to succeed. But do you know if every team member truly understands how his or her contributions have a direct impact on the firmâs bottom line? Thereâs a strong chance that many of your employees arenât making this important connection. A survey by our company found that more than half of professionals (53 percent) wish they had more insight on how their day-to-day duties make a difference to the organization. Gen X employees feel the most disconnected The surveyâs findings also point to a potential staffing management issue that many employers will want to move swiftly to address: Only 38 percent of professionals who are 35 to 54 years old - essentially, the Generation X demographic - said they see a direct correlation between their efforts and the companyâs performance. This compares to 44 percent of employees who are 18 to 34 years old (primarily millennials - Generation Y and Generation Z) and 59 percent of workers over the age of 55(baby boomers). Given that many Gen X workers are now serving in leadership roles, this disconnect could ultimately hurt a companyâs bottom line if it is left to fester. Tim Hird, executive director of Robert Half Management Resources, says, âItâs concerning that so many workers who are 35 to 54 - a group that often serves as managers and top executives - lack a complete understanding of how their responsibilities help their organizationâs bottom line.â Hird also notes that when workers have a sense of connection, they are more engaged, make better spending decisions and can identify new ways to increase productivity and growth. However, interestingly, the survey also found that only about half (51 percent) of respondents from the 35 to 54 age group said they would like more insight on how their work makes an impact. Why not a higher percentage? It could be that Gen X professionals in some organizations do not have someone working above them who could provide this perspective. Others may not be comfortable asking their manager to provide such insight, as they might be concerned that admitting they do not completely understand how their work makes a difference will somehow reflect poorly on them. All accounting and finance staff must be able to visualize how their work fits into the âbig pictureâ Even though millennial and baby boomer employees appear to have an easier time connecting their contributions to the bottom line, the survey findings show that managers need to do more to ensure that workers across all demographic groups in their organization understand how their work adds value. And failing to prioritize these efforts could have a negative impact on the business, according to Hird. âManagers who do not have regular conversations with staff about how their work affects the company are missing a major opportunity to develop ideas for improving the business,â he says. Good communication from management is essential to ensuring that accounting and finance employees know how they as, individuals, are making a difference at the firm. With that in mind, here's some advice for helping employees better understand how they make a difference: Discuss company performance and goals with staff members at all levels. Sharing this knowledge directly can also inspire workers to boost their own performance. Find ways to keep the dialogue going. Staff meetings, performance reviews and regular check-ins all provide opportunities for managers to communicate how individual employeesâ contributions benefit the business. Accounting and finance leaders should also seek out external perspectives as a way to benchmark their teamâs performance and learn best practices from other firms. Executives can check in with their networks and with consultants to see how managers at other companies are communicating with their staff members about their contributions. Tapping outside resources for insights can yield ideas from a diverse set of organizations. Tags
